New Principal Learning and Project/Extended Project Qualifications within the WBQ

12 May 2009

Two regional conferences are to be held in June to update centres on the new Principal Learning and Project qualifications available within the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification. These will take place on:

  • Wednesday, 10th June 2009 at Venue Cymru, Llandudno
  • Monday 15th June 2009 at The Marriott Hotel, Cardiff

A letter of invitation and application form was sent to Head teachersand Principals of Secondary Schools and Further Education Institutions in Wales, 14 – 19 Network Co-ordinators and Key Stakeholders in Wales.

In June 2008, DCELLS held two regional conferences on the new Principal Learning and Project qualifications available within the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification.

From September 2009 the Principal Learning qualifications at all three levels will be available in Engineering, Construction and the Built Environment, Creative & Media and Information Technology as phase one of the implementation.

From September 2010 six further Principal Learning qualifications will be available for phase two of the implementation. These will be in Environmental and Land-based studies, Hair and Beauty, Hospitality, Manufacturing and Product Design, Business, Administration and Finance and Society, Health and Development.

The Project or Extended Project (at level three) qualification must be completed with the Principal Learning qualification, although it will also be available outside of the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification.

To ensure that colleagues have sufficient opportunity to discuss and understand these plans, DCELLS are holding two further regional conferences in North and South Wales, on 10 and 15 June 2009 respectively. At the conferences information will be provided about the qualifications themselves, how they can be offered through the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification, the level of development funding available and how schools and colleges can participate. Information stands from a range of stakeholders such as Awarding Bodies and Skills Sector Councils will also be present and there will be opportunity for networking and sharing of good practice.

These conferences are appropriate for both existing Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification centres AND centres considering introducing the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification in September 2010.

For teachers attending the seminar, the refund of costs of supply cover of up to two people per school together with reasonable expenses will be available.
